History of Lions Clubs International
1917: The Beginning Chicago business leader Melvin Jones asked a simple and world-changing
question – what if people put their talents to work improving their communities? Almost 100 years later, Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club organization, with more than 1.3 million members in more than 45,000 clubs and countless stories of Lions acting on the same simple idea: let's improve our communities.
1920: Going International Just three years after our founding, Lions became international when we established the first club in Canada. Mexico followed in 1927. In the 1950s and 1960s international growth accelerated, with new clubs in Europe, Asia and Africa.
1925: Eradicating Blindness Helen Keller addressed the Lions Clubs International Convention in Cedar Point, Ohio, USA, and challenged Lions to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness." Since then, we have worked tirelessly to aid the blind and visually impaired.
1945: Uniting Nations The ideal of an international organization is exemplified by our enduring
relationship with the United Nations. We were one of the first nongovernmental organizations invited to assist in the drafting of the United Nations Charter and have supported the work of the UN ever since.
1957: Organizing Youth Programs In the late 1950s, we created the Leo Program to provide the youth of the world with an opportunity for personal development through volunteering. There are approximately 144,000 Leos and 5,700 Leo clubs in more than 140 countries worldwide.
1968: Establishing Our Foundation Lions Clubs International Foundation assists Lions with global and large-scale local humanitarian projects. Through our Foundation, Lions meet the needs of their local and global communities.
1990: Launching SightFirst Through SightFirst, Lions are restoring sight and preventing blindness on a global scale. Launched in 1990, Lions have raised more than $346 million for this initiative. SightFirst targets the major causes of blindness: cataract, trachoma, river blindness, childhood blindness, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma.
Today: Extending Our Reach Lions Clubs International extends our mission of service every day – in local communities, in all corners of the globe. The needs are great and our services broad, including sight, health, youth, elderly, the environment and disaster relief. Our international network has grown to include more than 200 countries and geographic areas.

Introduction of Melvin Jones
Founder Lions Clubs International 1879/1961
Melvin Jones was born on January 13, 1879 in Fort Thomas, Arizona, the son of a United States Army captain who commanded a troop of scouts. Later, his father was transferred and the family moved east. As a young man, Jones made his home in Chicago, Illinois, became associated with an insurance firm and in 1913 formed his own agency. He soon joined the Business Circle, a businessmen’s luncheon group, and was shortly elected secretary. This group was one of many at that time devoted solely to promoting the financial interests of their membership. Because of their limited appeal, they were destined to disappear. Melvin Jones, however, had other plans. “What if these men,” he asked, “who are successful because of their drive, intelligence and ambition, were to put their talents to work improving their communities ?” Thus, at his invitation, delegates from men’s clubs met in Chicago to lay the groundwork for such an organization and on June 7, 1917, Lions Clubs International was born. It was stipulated that clubs were not to be social in nature nor were members permitted to promote their own business interests. Jones eventually abandoned his insurance agency to devote himself full time to Lions at International Headquarters in Chicago. It was under his dynamic leadership that Lions Clubs earned the prestige necessary to attract civic-minded members. The association’s founder was also recognized as a leader outside the association. One of his greatest honors was in 1945 when he represented Lions Clubs International as a consultant in San Francisco, California, at the organization of the United Nations. Melvin Jones, the man whose personal code “You can’t get very far until you start doing something for somebody else” became a guiding principle for public-spirited people the world over, died June 1, 1961 at 82 years of age. A junior manager, a senior manager and their boss are on their way to a meeting.
On their way through a park, they come across a wonder lamp. They rub the lamp and a ghost appears.
The ghost says,
"Normally, one is granted three wishes but as you are three, I will allow one wish each"
So the eager senior manager shouted, "I want the first wish. I want to be in the Bahamas, on a fast boat
and have no worries."Pufffff. and he was gone.
Now the junior manager could not keep quiet and shouted "I want to be In Florida with beautiful girls,
plenty of food and cocktails." Pufffff. and he was also gone.
The boss calmly said, "I want these two idiots back in the office after lunch at 12.35pm."
MORAL OF THE STORY IS: "ALWAYS ALLOW THE BOSS TO SPEAK FIRST"

“Leaders are individuals who establish direction for a working group of individuals, who gain commitment from these group members to this direction, and then motivate the members to achieve the directions’ outcomes. This activity is something individual members could not do on their own.” - Adapted from J.A. Conger,
“Leadership is mobilizing the actions and efforts of others to achieve common goals.”
“True leadership must be for the benefit of the followers not the enrichment of the leaders.” -Robert Townsend
“Dynamism is full of energy, enthusiasm, and a sense of purpose and able both to get things going and to get things done.”
Hence, Dynamic Leadership is the power that can lead the society towards new heights. We always talk about dynamism because the society itself is changing dynamically day by day. This kind of change is creating new challenges in our life. To adopt with this change we need to develop dynamic leadership.
The Lions club International also believes in Dynamic Leadership for creating positive change in the society. This year International President Eberhard J. Wirfs also believes one of the most basic facts of nature is that it is dynamic. The visual world continually undergoes change, both from dynamic events in the world itself . In other, more basic words, everything needs momentum, or movement, in order to progress, or grow. Move to grow. It’s a very basic concept,
which can be applied to almost everything. Nothing that remains static grows.
It is this basic concept – move to grow – that he has chosen as his theme for 2009-2010, with the ginkgo tree and leaf as its symbol.
Do We Need Leaders?
Consider how life including Families, Education, Businesses and Service associations would be different without leadership
Why is it important that we develop and choose effective leaders?
• Their decisions affect how we operate
• They play a role in how we are perceived by others
• Their actions impact membership
• If we follow ineffective leaders, we may become ineffective ourselves
Successful leaders are able to communicate and motivate his followers, build teams to solve problems and resolve conflicts. He can manage change and promote creativity.
As a result of an extensive study of leadership, Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner have developed a list of the practices of successful leaders and presented it in their book, The Leadership Challenge.
Practices of successful leaders
1. Challenge the process
2. Inspire a shared vision
3. Enable others to act
4. Model the way
5. Encourage the heart
Challenge the process
A successful leader faces and overcomes barriers and never fears failure.
The most effective leaders have faced and met challenges and change. They found that they needed to challenge the existing process to accomplish an important task, and that they did not let the risk of failure prevent them from achieving their goals.
Nelson Mandela can be considered as an example of a successful leader.
Inspire a shared vision
A true leader makes sure his or her vision is consistent with the vision of the team. The goal is a team goal, not just one person expecting others to “buy in.”
Kouzes and Posner point out that:
• Leaders have a desire to make something happen
• They realize that people will not follow unless they accept the vision as their own
• They know their team members and how to communicate with them
• They recognize the needs and interests of team members
• They demonstrate enthusiasm for their vision, spread that enthusiasm to others
Ex. Martin Luther King is a leader who inspired a shared vision.
Enable others to act
A Leader is not a person who controls, but the one who recognizes the value in letting others make decisions, the one who knows that team members must develop a sense of “ownership” for their work to be meaningful. He/she Coaches and supports the team members and promotes trust and confidence in them.
For example Melvin Jones was a leader who enabled others to act.
Model the way
The Leaders set an example and they go first to show the way. They never ask people to do things they won’t do themselves and make sure their deeds match their words. The leader understands it’s the little things collectively that lead to overall team success.
Mahatma Gandhi is a good example of a leader who modeled the way to freedom.
Encourage the heart
Leaders inspire us to keep going when times are tough.
Leaders encourage their team to keep going even when it is a struggle. They use simple actions and/or dramatic gestures to encourage their team members and provide them recognition, rewards, celebrations. A leader also coaches and gives positive reinforcement to motivate the team.
Mother Teresa is one of such leader.
So we need a kind of leader who can lead us to a better society.
In this 21st Century, we need Dynamic Leadership for the change and betterment.
